Accessibility and performance
Accessibility#
Oriel is built to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA.
- Every control works with a keyboard and shows a visible focus outline.
- Menus, drawers, the search window and the image viewer are announced correctly by screen readers, and return focus to where the customer was when they close.
- Moving content can be paused, and stops for visitors who prefer reduced motion.
- Form errors appear under each field, in your store's language.
To keep your store accessible:
- Add alt text to product images and other meaningful images.
- Keep enough contrast between text and background colors when you edit color schemes.
- Use headings in order in your page content: a level 2 heading before a level 3 heading.
Performance#
Oriel loads only the code each page needs, sizes images for each screen and loads images further down the page as customers scroll. To keep your store fast:
- Upload images at least 2000 px wide, but compress them first: the file size matters more than the dimensions.
- Remove apps you no longer use. Many apps add code to every page.
- Keep the number of sections on your home page reasonable.
